South louisiana correctional facility top 5 facts

South Louisiana Correctional Facility (also known as the Basile Detention Center) is a privately owned and operated prison facility located on the eastern edge of Basile in Acadia Parish, Louisiana. The facility was opened in 1993 by the private prison company LCS Corrections Services. It has 1,048 beds.

Housing both male and female inmates at a mix of minimum, medium, and maximum security, LCS contracts with the federal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections, although only a small fraction of the population are ICE detainees.

In July and August 2009, a hundred ICE inmates in Basile staged a series of five hunger strikes to protest substandard conditions and lack of appropriate medical care.
