History

South College traces its history to 1882 when Jacob T. Johnson established a branch of Nashville Business College in downtown Knoxville. That institution later changed its name to Knoxville Business College.

For most of its history, the school's offerings were primarily in fields such as accounting and business, with computer-related fields added over time. Since 1989, the curriculum has expanded to include paralegal and legal studies, criminal justice, elementary education, and a variety of health-related subjects.

Locations

The school was housed in several different downtown buildings during its history. In 1900 it moved into a part of the public library building on the corner of Gay Street and Vine Street. Beginning in 1910 it occupied the Cherokee Building on the corner of Church Street and Prince Street, about a block south of Market Square. From the 1940s to the 1980s the school was located in a building at 209 West Church Street in downtown Knoxville, commonly known as the Keyhole Building, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1980s, the school moved to North Fifth Avenue in Knoxville, where it remained until 2005.

Knoxville Business College changed its name to South College in 2001. In 2005 it moved to a new campus on Hayfield Road. The following year it relocated its main campus to a site on Lonas Drive, converting the Hayfield Road campus to a "learning site". In 2011, the college relocated its "learning site" to a new campus in the former headquarters building of Goody's Family Clothing, in western Knox County.

In 1998, South College acquired Cecil's College, a former business school in Asheville, North Carolina. In 2002, it was renamed South College - Asheville, and relocated to 140 Sweeten Creek Road.

Academic programs

South College awards bachelor's degrees in business administration, criminal justice, elementary education, health science, legal studies, nursing, and pharmaceutical science. At the master's degree level, the school has an educational program for physician assistants and a master's of education program. At the doctorate degree level, the school has an educational program for pharmacists. Associate degree titles include accounting, business administration, criminal justice, medical assisting, paralegal studies, physical therapist assistant, and radiography. A certificate program in nuclear medicine is offered. Additionally, South offers the Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Education After College Here (TEACH) certificate program that helps qualify people with bachelor's degrees to become elementary school teachers.
