South Carthage is a town in Smith County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,322 at the 2010 census. The town is located along the Cumberland River. Carthage is located on the opposite side of the river.

South Carthage is located at 36°14′44″N 85°57′29″W (36.245584, -85.958043).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2), of which 2.6 square miles (6.8 km2) is land and 0.077 square miles (0.2 km2), or 2.91%, is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,302 people, 554 households, and 366 families residing in the town. The population density was 501.0 people per square mile (193.3/km²). There were 589 housing units at an average density of 226.6 per square mile (87.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.31% White, 2.46% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.54% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.38% of the population.
There were 554 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the town, the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,592, and the median income for a family was $35,066. Males had a median income of $31,080 versus $20,577 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,425.
