The Durban Xenophobic attack was an anti-foreigner violence that started in Durban, South Africa and extended to some parts of Johannesburg

Background

Some unemployed South Africans were of the view that other African nationals had taken up their jobs and so decided to attack them so they would return to their homelands. This was believed to have been sparked by an alleged statement by the Zulu King asking all foreigners to go back to their countries and leave South Africa jobs for the unemployed youth of South Africa.

Deaths and casualties

In all seven people including were reported dead as a result of the violence.

Rally

After the incident over 5000 people took part in a rally held in Durban South Africa

Diplomatic row

Following this incidents many African countries had strained diplomatic relations with South Africa.Nigeria recalled its High Commissioner in South Africa following this event.
