Solar cycle 3

Solar cycle 3 was the third solar cycle since 1755, when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began. The solar cycle lasted 9.3 years, beginning in June 1775 and ending in September 1784. The maximum smoothed sunspot number (monthly number of sunspots averaged over a twelve-month period) observed during the solar cycle was 158.5 (May 1778), and the minimum was 9.5. The maximum is identical with that of solar cycle 22, where the peak of 158.5 occurred in July 1989, making it the equal third highest peak on record.

William Herschel began observing sunspots during this period.
