Sobia Tahir (Urdu: ثوبیہ طاہر‎) is a thinker, researcher, writer and professor of Philosophy. She is teaching philosophy of religion, Classical, Modern and Contemporary Islamic Philosophy since 2008 at Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies department, Government College University, Lahore. She is the founding Coordinator of M.Phil Programme in the Department of Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies in the Government College University Lahore. Her main areas of research are critical philosophy, literature and translation.

Education

She got her master’s degree in philosophy from University of the Punjab, Lahore. Also, she got her PHD from the same university in 1996. She accomplished her postdoctoral research from Columbia University in 2012 on the topic of “A Monograph on Hassan Hanafi: Comparative Analysis with Muhammad Iqbal”. She covered in her post doctoral diploma Hassan Hanafi’s philosophical approach, his contribution in the current Islamic Thought, his intellectual development, his efforts to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity in Islam, his participation in the Heritage and Renewal Project, his brain-child Occidentalism and the strong cerebral and scholarly bond he bears with the eminent South Asian poet and philosopher Muhammad Iqbal.

Career

She started her career as Trainee Sub Editor at Daily Pakistan Lahore from 1990 to 1992. Then she moved to The Daily Khabrain and worked there as Sub Editor from 1992 to 1995. She also worked as News Editor for Daily Akhbar e Lahore from 1995 to 1996.

She has been working as Assistant Director “Planning, Programme Development and Monitoring Division” Family Planning Association of Pakistan since 1996-2001.

She has also been working as Director, Planning, Programme Development and Monitoring Division Family Planning Association of Pakistan since 1 February 2002 to 31 May 2006. On 1 June 2006 the same post was converted into Manager Knowledge Management/Annual Programme Budget (KM/APB) and the Division renamed as Programme, Planning Division (PPD). The position was retained till Jan. 2008.
