The four friends Ivo, Fatso, Emi, and Polly live fairly normal lives in Budapest, Emi and Fatso have just recently gotten in a relationship. Together, they decide to fly to Indonesia for the next semester break to party and do drugs. On the plane to Jakarta they are seated next to the brothers Ivo and Haran, small time criminals from Wolograd. Haran shows interest in Polly, but its clearly not mutual.
After the crash, Polly and Ivo wake up at a shore, only to find Harans lifeless body in the sand. They wander the beach in the rain, and eventually find Fatso, and Emi. For days, the group struggles to find food and shelter in the wreckage, when they eventually stumble upon three shipping intermodal containers washed ashore, which contains only different sneakers. They build their home in and around the containers, and their lives begin to center around the shoes. Over time, the tension between Ivo and Fatso grows, until at dinner, Ivo attacks Fatso with a Spork over a discussion about which sneaker is best. Surprisingly, Fatso manages to stab Ivo in the neck, leading him to bleed to death in the sand, drenching it in blood, while Polly attempts to save him unsuccessfully.
The group grows distant from that event on, until months later they are found by a passing cargo ship and taken aboard. In the epilogue, Polly Fatso and Emi visit Grey, a famous designer of clothing, and gift him the pair of 'HI'-sneakers Ivo had preferred.
