History

Slovenská sporiteľňa has the longest tradition out of all the banking institutions in Slovakia, which dates back to the 19th century.

In modern times the bank was at first part of Československá štátna sporiteľňa (Czechoslovak State Savings Bank), established in 1953. Since 1969 it commenced an independent operation as Slovenská štátna sporiteľňa (Slovak State Savings Bank).

Changes after the year 1989 reflected liberalisation of the financial sector, which resulted in increasing competition. In 1990, Slovenská štátna sporiteľňa obtained universal banking license and widened its activities also to the segment of institutional and corporate clients.

The bank entered the Slovak money and capital markets in 1991, when these markets came into being. In 1994, Slovenská štátna sporiteľňa was transformed in a joint-stock company and started its activities under the brand name of Slovenská sporiteľňa (Slovak Savings Bank).

Transformation process in Slovenská sporiteľňa started in January 2001, immediately after the signing of the Share Purchase Agreement by the majority shareholder of Austrian Erste Bank, which has a leading position in retail banking in Central Europe.

Erste Group

Founded in 1819 as the first Austrian savings bank, Erste Group went public in 1997 with a strategy to expand its retail business into Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Since then Erste Group has grown through numerous acquisitions and organic growth to one of the largest financial services providers in the Eastern part of EU in terms of clients and total assets. With more than 16.2 millions of clients it has the leading position on Central European retail banking market.
