Skin Wars Contestants on the series perform challenges containing body painting each episode. At the end of each episode, one contestant is eliminated and told "It's time to wash off your canvas."

Production

On September 12, 2013, GSN ordered eight episodes of the series, making it GSN's first television show devoted to body art. On February 4, 2014, GSN announced Rebecca Romijn as host of Skin Wars, with RuPaul Charles, Craig Tracy and Robin Slonina serving as judges.

The series premiered on GSN August 6, 2014. That same night, the network also began airing an online series entitled Skin Wars: The Naked Truth with Kandee Johnson airing immediately after Skin Wars on DOOR3, GSN's YouTube channel targeted toward 18- to 25-year-olds. The series features commentary from Johnson as well as highlights from that night's episode and a "Skinterview" with one of the contestants.
On September 30, 2014, GSN announced plans to air a ten-episode second season of Skin Wars with Romijn and all three judges returning to reprise their respective roles. The second season premiered June 10, 2015.

A spinoff called Skin Wars: Fresh Paint hosted by RuPaul aired as a special on August 26, 2015. Where it features six highly accomplished artists, each at the top of their game, as they leave their comfort zones to compete in body painting for the first time. The artist must conquer three difficult challenges, as they are mentored by three top artist from the first season Bihary Dutch, Lawrence "Gear" Duran and season one champion, Natalie Fletcher where as the artist work closely with their body painting mentors as they try to quickly master the craft and win the $100,000 prize and become champion. It premiered to 456,000 viewers. Later, it became as a series itself on June 15, 2016.
On August 27, 2015, GSN renewed the series for a third season.

Mini-Challenge: Rebecca Romijn spun a wheel for each contestant and they must create a piece based on whatever the wheel
landed on. Options included Major Passion, Favorite Song, "Major achievement", "Memory of childhood",
Challenge: Each winner from the mini-challenge picked a chess piece and an opponent to head to head against with a full
body head-to-toe 360° body paint inspired by their chess pieces. Pairings were:

Mini-Challenge: The painters were tasked with creating a body paint look that incorporates real candy.
Challenge: Each painter was assigned a specific buffet table background to camouflage their model into. Rebecca, randomly
assigned the tables to the artists but once every table was assigned, Cheryl Ann, was given the opportunity to switch tables with any
other artist. She chose to take the fruit table from Lana. Tables were:
Episode 3: Musical Harmony

Mini-Challenge: The painters came in to 11 chairs set up in a circle each with an instrument sitting in front of them. After playing
a few rounds of musical chairs, each painter was tasked with creating an upper body paint inspired by the instrument that was
sitting in front of them.
Challenge: Each painter was teamed up in pairs of two (by Rio). The pairs were then tasked with picking two genres of music and
created a cohesive full body, two model look. Pairs were:
Episode 4: Queens or Divas?

Mini-Challenge: Each painter was assigned a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit location and was tasked with creating a location specific body
paint bathing suit for their model. Locations were:
Challenge: Each painter was tasked with creating a head-to-toe 360° body paint fit for a music award show for their Drag Queen clientele from previous seasons of Rupaul's hit show Rupaul's Drag Race based on their favorite music artists. Pairing were chosen randomly and were as follows:
Episode 5: Emotional Rollercoaster

Mini-challenge: Each painter must create a body paint that makes RuPaul laugh.
Challenge: In teams of four, the painters were tasked with coming up with a group horror body paint that tells a story and uses four models.
Episode 6: I'm Steampunk'd
Original airdate: July 22, 2015
Mini-Challenge: Each painter was given a treasure chest with a Victorian Jewel and were tasked with created a waist-up
360° design that tells the story of the jewel with only 2 hours to paint.
Challenge: Each painter was tasked to create a head-to-toe 360° full body paint that fits into the Steampunk genre, incorporating both
Victorian elements and futuristic elements. Painters were urged to bring Steampunk into the 21st century with bright vibrant colors.

Mini-Challenge: Each painter was tasked with coming up with a body paint and pose for a Circus Playbill.
Challenge: The remaining 6 painters were tasked with creating 3 full body head-to-toe 360° body paints for modern day circus
performers from Lucent Dossier Experience in pairs. Additionally the teams were required to utilize ultra-violet paint to make their looks
visible under blacklight
