Skateboard Park Tycoon: 2003 World Tour is a business simulation game for Windows. Released in 2002, the game was the second installment in the Skateboard Park Tycoon series, developed by Cat Daddy games, and published under the Activision Value label.

Challenges

Within the game, there are six different types of game modes. In order to unlock locations, the player must complete a set number of tasks within a location.

Flag Challenge

The goal of this level is to capture all of the flags be running into them. This is done by placing the available ramps and pieces in a manner which allows the player to reach said flags. The player is able to jump between build mode and skate mode to test the structures an unlimited number of times, without any time limit restraints. The flags change design in each location, displaying the flag of the nation the player is currently skating in.

Maximum Coinage!

The object of this level is to collect a specified number of coins and get to the trophy before time runs out. There are two types of coins found in this challenge: Gold and Red. Gold coins are the most common type found, and are used as a means to guide the player through the park. Red coins are worth five gold coins, and as a result, appear less frequently, and are harder to reach. In addition to the two coins, a stopwatch can be collected, adding five seconds onto the timer.

Exhibition Challenge

The player competes in a skate competition, aiming to achieve above a certain place against AI, performing tricks until the time runs out. The rankings are not revealed to the player until after they've aborted the exhibition or have run out of time.

Monkey See, Monkey Do

The player must complete set tricks, as demonstrated by a skateboarding monkey. The players must replicate the tricks in the same sequence as the monkey and before the time expires.

Gem Hunter Challenge

The player is required to find and capture all the gems hidden throughout a level before time runs out. Initially, the player is provided with only a small amount of time, which can be extended by collecting stopwatches, which add 30 seconds to the timer.

Tycoon Cash/Rating Challenge

The player is required to build a skatepark which is either worth a certain amount of the in-game currency or rates a certain score when compared to other skateparks, in order to progress. The player can obtain up to four sponsorships throughout this challenge, unlocking more ramps, rails and skate pieces, in addition to obtaining a daily cash bonus. Within this challenge, the player is also allowed to switch between Tycoon mode (building) and skate mode, by taking control over any of the visitors of their park, in either the form of an exhibition challenge or s free roam, time-limit-less practice mode. In addition to building intriguing skate structures to attract potential visitors, players must also ensure the visitors have the appropriate facilities onsite, to avoid losing business, quite similarly to most other tycoon games.

Locations

There are seven primary locations within the World Tour mode. In order to unlock a location, a certain number of challenges must be completed in the location which precedes it. Three other locations are available in Instant Action mode (which focuses on the Tycoon Aspect of the game), all of which are unlockable after World Tour mode has been completed.

Venice Beach, California

The first location within the game. The level is fairly flat, and as a result, provides a spacious area for the player to build in during the Tycoon Cash Challenge. However, players must be cautious in their exploration of the location, as the map drops off after a certain distance, in addition to the shark infested waters which cover around a quarter of the map.

    This location is initially locked, however, it can be unlocked by completing one challenge from Venice Beach. This location is characterised by its small side streets and small raised slabs. Players will find themselves skating around the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe in this level.

    This location is initially locked, however, it can be unlocked by completing two challenges from Paris.

  • Mayan Temple, Mexico

    This location is initially locked, however, it can be unlocked by completing three challenges from Rome.

  • China

    This location is initially locked, however, it can be unlocked by completing three challenges from the Mayan Temple.
    The challenges available in this location are:

  • Tycoon Cash Challenge
  • Moscow, Russia

    This location is initially locked, however, it can be unlocked by completing four challenges from China. The map itself is fairly barren, with plenty of space to build a skatepark, despite having numerous raised edges, similar to that of Paris.

    This location is initially locked, however, it can be unlocked by completing five challenges from Moscow. The map is set on top of a skyscraper, and primarily focuses on speed boosts, making it the fastest paced map in the game.

    Aside from the World Tour mode, the Instant Action mode allows players to jump into tycoon mode instantly and start creating their dream skatepark. While all seven of the World Tour locations are available within this mode, three unique maps are available for the player to build on, once World Tour mode is completed. These are:

  • Parking Lot
  • Mansion Property
  • Big Skatepark
  • All three locations are fairly flat and large, giving the player sufficient space to create their dream skatepark. However, unlike the World Tour locations, all three Instant Action maps do not contain any hidden boost vents, and as a result, do not allow players to obtain the same speeds or give them the same airtime as the standard maps.

    Trick List

    In order to complete exhibition sections of the game, the player must employ a variety of tricks, sewn together using combos to achieve a high score. Within the game, there are two primary types of tricks which form combos; Aerial and Grind. Upon ending each combo, the player is awarded points, depending on which tricks they used, and how well they landed the combo. The three possible ratings upon completing a combo are perfect, sloppy or crashed.

    Aerial Tricks

    Aerial tricks are graded on a number of factors. Firstly, as mentioned prior, depending on how a player lands a combo, the total points received will vary somewhat to their standard scoring values (as listed below). Secondly, by chaining together tricks in the form of a combo, the player may receive additional points. Finally, the value of a trick can be increased by incorporating spins (which is the result of the player pressing the Z and X keys), which multiply the score according the number degrees rotated divided by 180.

    Soundtrack

    The soundtrack for this game features the music of Big Wig, District 7, Dynamite Boy, Formula One, HOPE and Junction 18.
