Simone Browne is black diaspora studies and surveillance studies scholar who is currently an associate professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora studies the University of Texas at Austin. Her topics of research and teaching include surveillance, biometrics, airport security, social media, black diaspora and virtual worlds.

Surveillance and race online simone browne at mozfest
Academic career

Browne holds an MA and Ph.D. in Sociology and Equity Studies in Education from the University of Toronto. She was a faculty affiliate at the University of Kansas's Surveillance Studies Research Center, and has also worked as a faculty affiliate at the University of Texas at Austin's Center for Women and Gender Studies, the Warfield Center for African and African American Studies and the departments of American Studies and Sociology. Browne is currently on the Executive Board of HASTAC, or the Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory. Browne is a member of Deep Lab.
