He played in the 2006 Men's Hockey World Cup in Mönchengladbach, Germany and at the Field hockey at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. At the start of the Rio Olympics, Child had earned 260 caps for New Zealand. He is current captain of the New Zealand Men's Hockey Team.
