Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) is a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University that specializes in the fields of STEM education and research. It was established in the year of 1997 as a part of Sikkim Government and Manipal Group's joint venture to establish one of the first public-private partnership (PPP) based institutions in India.

The institute, having 8 academic departments and awarding undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees, is one of the institutes for technical education in East and North-East India.

History

Established in the year 1997, in a public-private partnership between Government of Sikkim and Manipal Global, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) first started from its temporary campus in Tadong, Sikkim and later moved to its permanent campus in 1999. The institute is approved by AICTE, NBA ,University Grants Commissions(India) and holds ISO certifications and accreditation for all its courses.

    The institute has a 33 acre, mountain-terrain residential rural campus, located in the village of Majitar in the north-eastern state of Sikkim. The campus has the following buildings divided into several blocks ranging from block A to block H.

    Student Culture and Alumni

    Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology has a very active student culture that facilitates both cultural and technical development. There are currently 7 active technical and cultural clubs on campus and students have taken part and gained accolades in various events and fests such as SAE Supra, ACM-ICPC, Nasscom Smart City Hackathon, Spring Fest among many others. Students also arrange for and participate in various intra-collegiate events such as the annual techno-cultural festival, Kaalrav (held in March), TEDxSMIT (held in October),inter-departmental fests etc. The Editorial Board publishes the annual college magazine, The Smitsonian (September).

    In order to address student grievances the college also has an active Student Council and a Mess and Canteen Committee.

    The college also boasts of a strong, active and well-accomplished alumni which is brought together by the Student Alumni Cell and the Alumni Association. The annual Alumni Meet is held in the month of April.

    SMIT has an MUTBI Satellite Center here in campus. MUTBI or Manipal University Technology Business Incubator is an initiative of Manipal University for developing innovation and entrepreneurial skills among its faculty and students. MUTBI in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Cell will be providing infrastructural support and seed funding to the budding entrepreneurs of SMIT.
