History

ShowBiz Cinemas was founded in 2007 by Kevin L. Mitchell, who serves as president and CEO of the company. Prior to the company's founding, Mitchell worked with his father Lee Roy Mitchell's company Cinemark Theatres. During his tenure Cinemark grew from a local cinema company to an international firm with over 4,500 screens under management. ShowBiz Cinemas is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

In 2014, ShowBiz Cinemas executed plans to double the circuit's size from 28-50 screens by the following year. From that point, the company has built 2-3 new locations per year, making ShowBiz Cinemas one of the leading privately owned theatre operators in Texas. The majority of the new complexes represent ShowBiz Cinemas’ new, enriched footprint, which features boutique bowling catered toward families, a full arcade center with redemption room, and casual gatherings for both youths and adults, as well as corporate events. All four locations will feature SDX screens; state-of-the-art digital projection with 3D capabilities; oversized leather seating; pristine digital sound; self-serve concession areas and a full café and bar that will offer theatre favorites in addition to an expanded menu that will enable both theatre and bowling guests to enjoy delicious items including brisket sliders, flatbread pizzas, Angus burgers, chicken tenders, as well as hand-scooped Blue Bell ice cream and a full selection of coffee. The bars will serve a complete selection of mixed drinks, premium wines, craft beers and frozen cocktails.

Location and details of the new sites are as follows:
• Baytown, Texas; located at the southeast corner of I-10 and 146: 10 screens including SDX and 14 bowling lanes.
• Houston, Texas; located at Beltway 8 and Highway 90: 11 screens including SDX.
• Houston, Texas; Fall Creek, located at Beltway 8 and Wilson Road: 10 screens including SDX and 14 bowling lanes.

As of March 2015 the company also has an additional 34 screens and 44 bowling lanes under negotiation.

Theatre practices

ShowBiz Cinemas was the first company in Texas to offer D-Box theatre chairs in its cinemas, which are programmed to provide motion effects for the movie-goer specific to the film being watched. The company also provides assistance programs to those unable to afford the theatre, including 50 cent movie tickets and discounted tickets for US veterans and underprivileged children. Showbiz cinemas have been the site for film premieres, including the Chuck Norris documentary Answering the Call about Norris' 2007 visit with the combat troops overseas during the Iraq War. The event was also used to support Norris' martial arts-based program Kickstart, which teaches martial arts to at-risk teenagers. ShowBiz Cinemas also partnered with the Crossroads of Texas Film Festival to host the Chris Kyle hometown premiere of American Sniper, benefiting the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation.

Corporate information

ShowBiz Cinemas has received numerous awards of excellence, including Exhibitor of the Year by Tri-State Theatre Owners Association and voted Readers Choice for Best Place to Watch a Movie four years in a row. They are involved in numerous charitable organizations nationally and locally, including Chuck Norris’s Kickstart Kids, and industry charities Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneer Foundation and Variety – The Children’s Charity. ShowBiz Cinemas is also a member of the National Association of Theatre Owners, the National Association of Concessionaires, and International Council of Shopping Centers. In 2016, Barco was awarded the Bronze Apex award from the Digital Signage expo for their work on ShowBiz Cinemas' Baytown location.
