Shopcade is a social shopping application. A dual platform offering, the web and mobile-based app offers a daily fashion fix of top trends and deals to 16- to 25-year-old fashion conscious users globally, with primary markets in the UK and America.

Contents

The social commerce platform was launched in November 2011 by Nathalie Gaveau (co-founder of PriceMinister), Marie-Barbe Girard, Hoon Kim and Evan Adelman. Shopcade allows users to stay updated with trends, celebrity looks and deals all in one place, powered by magazines, celebrities, bloggers, and its users. Based on their interests and location, Shopcade users benefit from personalised deal alerts. Shopcade also offers a click-through purchasing functionality and its own e-commerce platform.

The Shopcade mobile application offers over 100 million products and 100,000 brands. Over 750,000 users are actively engaged with Shopcade and from an editorial standpoint, the web-based and mobile-based app combined garner 2,000,000 page views monthly. Shopcade is available to download for free on Apple and Android mobile devices.

Usage

As of January 2014, Shopcade has mobile apps for iOS and Android operating systems, along with its website. Users can create an account via Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and e-mail. Users can log in to see the daily trending feed, a collection of new celebrity and blogger styles, new trends from magazines and Shopcade curators, and new collections and deals from brands. Users can buy items from the relevant retail site or save them to wish lists for later. When items that a user has saved are on sale or a deal is being offered, Shopcade alerts the user via the mobile app or on e-mail. Users can also use the bookmarklet tool (that can be added to the bookmark bar) to add any product to Shopcade from other websites. Bloggers and publishers have access to a Shopcade widget to display their selections of products on their own websites.

History

In June 2012, Shopcade became one of the first social commerce platforms to integrate gamification. The Trend Score measures site influence, and users gain access to different Missions, which result in rewards in both virtual and physical formats. Points are awarded for various actions across the site, which can then be used to unlock Perks, a range of exclusive deals and products available based on the user's Trend Score.

Funding

Key investors include former Apple European CEO, Pascal Cagni, former BBC Director-General John Birt, co-founder of Games Workshop and Life President of Eidos, Ian Livingstone, and Chairman of retail group Kingfisher and former Chief Executive Officer of Carrefour, Daniel Bernard.

Other

Shopcade has previously been criticised for incentivizing social network users to spam their friends. Shopcade, despite its rapid growth and publicity, is not the only company operating in this sector. With established competitors such as Mallzee and Lyst competing for the largest market share and user acquisition.
