Background and composition

After reaching three consecutive number ones on the UK Singles Chart with DJ Fresh's "Hot Right Now", as well as with her singles "R.I.P." (featuring Tinie Tempah) and "How We Do (Party)", Ora announced that the UK third single from her debut album, Ora, would be "Shine Ya Light". Chris Loco, Fraser T Smith and Laura Pergolizzi wrote the song, while Chris Loco and Fraser T Smith were also the producers.

Chart performance

"Shine Ya Light" was released as a single on 4 November 2012. It reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, giving Ora her third UK top-ten single from her debut album, and fourth overall in 2012.

Music video

The music video for the track was filmed in Ora's city of birth, Pristina, Kosovo, and was released on Vevo on 27 October 2012. Ora explained why she chose this location for her video, saying "I was born in a little city called Pristina which no one really knows about, so I’m proud to kind of put it on the map out there a little bit because we are a very patriotic country so we always try and mention us wherever we can because it's such a great place". Speaking about the video (directed by Emil Nava), Ora said "The whole country was outside... I got off the plane, it was like millions of heads. I couldn't see the floor. I'm not even exaggerating. It was the most surreal experience I've ever felt. It was more than a music video. [It] was a moment in our history as Kosovo, it was a moment for people to see us: how we live, our landscape. It was my duty to do my video there". In the video, Ora is shown riding with a flank of bikers and gigging for excited hometown crowds in various places, such as the Newborn monument.

The single was also used to make the musical documentary "Columbia's 28". This short film, premiered on YouTube in December 2012, tells the story of the Space Shuttle Columbia's 28 missions. Filmmaker Salem Hanna chose "Shine Ya Light" as the basis for the video after hearing it on his car radio whilst wondering what music could evoke the soaring spirit of spaceflight, and was particularly drawn to the power of the lyrics as a way to describe cutting edge scientific research.

The song was included in the The Sims 3: Seasons soundtrack, Ora recorded the song in Simlish: the fictional language of the Sims.
