Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, M.Ed., is a Democratic politician from Michigan currently representing the 8th District—comprising northwest Detroit, including the Brightmoor and the Grandmont-Rosedale communities—in the Michigan House of Representatives after being elected in November 2014.

Personal life

Gay-Dagnogo has one son, Jordan. She is the former vice president and current resident of the North Rosedale Park Civic Association in Detroit, Michigan.

Education

Gay-Dagnogo attended Detroit Public Schools and Oak Park Public Schools, including Parker Elementary School, Winterhalter Middle School, Redford High School, and graduating from Oak Park High School. She went on to graduate from Wayne State University.

Professional life

Gay-Dagnogo is an educator, former Detroit City Council staff member and public education advocate. She has previously been involved with community engagement projects funded by the City of Detroit, UAW Region 1A, AFL–CIO, AFSCME Council 25, Great Start Collaborative, The Kresge Foundation, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, UCLA, United Way of Southeast Michigan and the Skillman Foundation.

Political career

Gay-Dagnogo ran for State Representative in 2012, coming in second in the Democratic primary election to the incumbent, David Nathan. In 2014, Nathan did not run for re-election due to term-limits, and Gay-Dagnogo won the Democratic nomination and the general election.

Taking office in January 2015, she was selected by Gov. Rick Snyder to serve on his bi-partisan coalition to improve Detroit Public Schools.
