Shashi Kant is a 1977 batch, Punjab cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who has served in several positions in his career before retiring in 2012 as Director General of Police (DGP). He was the Director General (Prisons), Punjab, India from October 2011 to June 2012. The former DGP is known for his crusade against Illegal drug trade in the state of Punjab and has named several senior Ministers who are patronizing drugs. In year 2012 he was the part of Indian anti-corruption movement led by social activist Anna Hazare.

Personal life

Shashi Kant was born on 24 June 1954 to the family of Mr Prithvi Raj & Mrs Satya Raj in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. He is married to Dr Rita Kant, a professor by profession and has two children Apurv and Aparna. Presently he along with his family lives in Chandigarh.

Career

During his 35 years (1977-2012) of career as police officer Mr Shashi Kant has held several key positions in Punjab Police, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) & Intelligence Bureau (IB). Some of them are stated below in chronological order:

After joining service he got his first posting in 1979 as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Patiala and in 1981 as Superintendent of Police, Faridkot where he was responsible for maintaining law & order. During his term as ASP Patiala, he was Aide-de-camp (ADC) to Governor of Punjab for few months. Later on in 1982 he was on central deputation to New Delhi where he served in different investigating agencies till he was transferred back to Punjab in 1992.
