Sharmila Melissa Yogalingam (born September 13, 1985) is a composer and writer-producer-director-filmmaker-actress from Singapore.

Awards

She was specially commissioned to write the lyrics of the theme song for Project Hope (Singapore), which ended up being entitled 'With Hands United'. The song was performed at the beginning of Project Hope in 2009, and served as the finale song for this important national televised fundraising event as well. The song was so well received, it was once again performed the following year, in 2010's Project Hope.

In 2011, Yogalingam was nominated for the Pesta Perdana awards, in the category for Best Theme Song, for her song 'With Hands United'.

Biography

Sharmila started performing when she joined a professional Arts group at age 5. She then spent the next 13 years appearing on stage, as well as in concerts, theatrical productions, television programs, and at other events.

Sharmila then took a long hiatus from the entertainment world at 18, to focus on school and writing.

She then returned to the entertainment world in 2009 with her award nominated song "With Hands United" which was the theme song for Project Hope in 2009 and 2010. The following year in 2011, the song was nominated for BEST THEME SONG.

She continues to compose and produce music for projects, albums and events.

In 2012, Sharmila became a filmmaker when she wrote, produced and directed The Journey. In 2013, she wrote, produced and directed GLT. Both films were screened at the Staffordshire Film Festival in the UK.

She completed several more short films, including the official SG50 movie THE SINGAPOREAN, which was commissioned for Singapore's 50th Jubilee Birthday Celebrations in 2015.

Her first feature film THE STOP is in post production and will be ready in late 2017.

In 2016, Sharmila produced and directed the critically acclaimed popular play EMILY OF EMERALD HILL and in 2017, she is producing and directing Donald Margulies' Pulitzer winning play DINNER WITH FRIENDS.

Also in 2017, Sharmila has been commissioned and funded by the SG Fund for the Web Show TAKING FLIGHT: OUR SINGAPORE STORIES where the meaning, value and importance of Singapore crafted and produced/published Movies, TV shows, Web shows, Books, Plays, Scripts and Theatre will be explored through a series of round table panels. The Web Show will premier in July, followed by live stage readings of Singapore plays in August.
