Bengali literature is called as Shahitto. writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays.

The first works in Bengali (written in new Bengali) appeared between 10th and 12th centuries C.E. It is generally known as the Charyapada.

There is a dark age in the history of Bengali literature. The age was dated to 1201 to 1350. In this time, no significant creation of Bengali literature has been found. And all these happened for the attack of the Turkish.
