Seth Marder is an American chemist best known for his development of the quantum mechanical foundations of polymeric nonlinear electro-optics. Marder obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978 and doctorate from Wisconsin-Madison in 1985 after which he was a postdoctoral researcher at Oxford from 1985-1987 and moved to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from 1987–1989. Afterward, Marder became a professor at the University of Arizona and moved to Georgia Institute of Technology in 2003 where he currently serves as a regents professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He currently studies polymers, nanostructures, and biomolecular solids.
