Biography

Serfiraz Hanımefendi was born as Ayşe Liah to the Abkhazian prince Osman Bey Liah and his wife Zeliha Tapsın. First, she was given in service to the palace along with her sisters, Hüsnümah Hanım and Agâh Hanım. However, soon the Sultan Abdülmecid I took notice of Ayşe Serfiraz and they married in 1851 in the Dolmabahçe Palace. Her sister, Hüsnümah Hanım was married to Suleiman Bey while her other sister stayed in the palace and later went for a pilgrimage.

In the year of 1885 the Sultan's sisters, daughters and wives are said to have incurred a debt of 288,000 purses, approximately 1.15 million pounds sterling, of which, Serfiraz Hanımefendi alone was responsible for 125,000 purses, approximately 500,000 pounds sterling. Serfiraz Hanımefendi died on 9 June 1905 at Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy and was buried in the mausoleum of Şehzade Kemaleddin Efendi, Yahya Efendi Cemetery.
