Sekolah Global Indo-Asia (SGIA) is an international school located in Batam, Indonesia. It is also a Cambridge International Examinations Center and an IB World School. The school offers IB Primary Years Programme for children in Pre-K until Year 5, Cambridge Checkpoint Programme for students in Year 6 - 8, and Cambridge IGCSE for students in Year 9 - 10. For the last two years of education, students take GCE A Level courses. Starting SY 2016 - 2017, students have the option to sit for the IB Diploma Programme instead of the traditional A Level. Students usually sit for the May - June examinations.

Contents

The languages of instruction are English, with Indonesian courses offered for students taking extra National Exam preparation classes and Mandarin / French being offered as an additional language. The school day begins at 07:30 and finishes at 15:15. After school activities are offered from 15:15 to 16:15.

Campus

SGIA has purpose-built facilities located on half a hectare (1.24 acres).

There are three sections to the school: an Early Childhood Centre, a Primary building and a Secondary building. The Early Childhood Centre has eight classrooms, a multi purpose room, a veranda and playground. This environment is designed for children aged 2–5, and is separate from the rest of the school.

The Primary building has 32 classrooms, including music, art, science and IT laboratories, and a library of English-language books. This two-story building has an open-air courtyard in the centre.

The temporary Secondary facility is on one floor with 12 classrooms, including science and IT laboratories.

Starting from SY 2015-2016, students take their regular classes in the new Secondary building. It has complete facilities like Science Labs, IT Labs and a Library. It is a two storey building located beside the Sports Hall with an open courtyard in the centre.

In addition to 2 soccer fields, the school has a large gymnasium and canteen area, both of which are covered but open to the fresh air.

Primary School

The Primary school has two sections, the Early Childhood Centre and the Primary School. The Early Childhood Centre has two half-day sections for Pre-K, K1 and K2, and classes are offered in the morning or afternoon, and full day for K3 classes. The Primary school has full-day sections for Year 1 up to Year 5 students. All Primary students have classes in art, music, physical education and Mandarin. Information technology is taught as part of the classroom instruction.

Pre-K up to Year 2 classes have 2 homeroom teachers, one English-speaking teacher and one bilingual (Indonesian/English) teacher. All teachers are well-trained PYP instructors.

Years 3-5 have an English speaking homeroom teacher who teaches English, Mathematics and the Units of Inquiry, which include science and social studies.

At Year 5, students start with their project for an annual PYP exhibition. At the end of Year 5, students will receive a certificate showing that they have completed the IB Primary Years Programme.

Secondary School

In Years 6 - 12 most subjects are taught in English. In Years 6 - 8 students follow the Cambridge Checkpoint Programme for English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and take the Checkpoint examinations at the end of grade 8.

In Years 9 and 10, students follow the IGCSE curriculum, in subjects such as English (first or second language), Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia, French, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Business Studies, Economics, ICT, History, and Global Perspectives. Students are divided into Science and Business streams with different sets of subjects to be taught.

In Years 11 - 12, student take the AS/A Level examination from a broad subject range. AS Level can be taken at the first year of the programme (Year 11) while A Level is taken at the final year (Year 12).

Starting SY 2016-2017, Year 11 & 12 students have the option to qualify for the IB Diploma Programme instead of the annual A Level.

In Years 6, 9 and 12, national students receive preparation for the UAN exams in Matematika, Science (IPA), Bahasa Indonesia and English.
