The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM, Chinese: 酒店及旅遊業管理學院) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) was established in 1979 as the Department of Institutional Management and Catering Studies. It was renamed as Department of Hotel and Tourism Management in 1992. The Department was designated a School in October 2001, which became an independent autonomous academic unit within the University structure in July 2004.
Contents
With over 2,100 students and 70 academic staff drawn from 22 countries and regions, the School offers programmes at levels ranging from undergraduate degrees to doctoral degrees. In 2012, the SHTM received from the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) the McCool Breakthrough Award. The award recognised the School’s breakthrough in the form of its teaching and research hotel – Hotel ICON. The SHTM is currently a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Knowledge Network.

Hotel ICON
Officially opened on 21 September 2011, Hotel ICON (唯港薈) is the teaching and research hotel built for the SHTM by PolyU. It was built on the site of Pak Sui Yuen, the former PolyU's staff quarters. Wholly owned by PolyU and an extension of the SHTM, Hotel ICON has 262 guestrooms including 165 Deluxe Rooms, 68 Deluxe Rooms on the Club Floors, 26 Suites and three dedicated "Tomorrow's Guestrooms" reserved for innovations and advance research.
Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Resource Centre
Designed to support the research, teaching and learning functions of the School, the Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Resource Centre houses a range of hotel and tourism management related reference and teaching materials, such as books, journals, magazines, statistical reports and conference proceedings. More than 160 international hospitality, tourism and food science journal titles are stocked. The centre is also equipped with facilities for student group projects and seminars.
Bistro 1979
Bistro 1979 is a student operated restaurant providing a real restaurant setting for SHTM students to learn and to experience the actual food and beverage management and operation. The restaurant has a capacity of 66 people and includes main and exclusive dining areas for its members and guests.
Vinoteca Lab
Vinoteca Lab is a wine lab used for a variety of classes ranging from basic to advanced levels of food and beverage preparation and appreciation. Classes such as wine appreciation, food and wine pairing are conducted to equip students with basic wine fundamentals as well as advanced skills in the professional evaluation of regional and international wines. The Food and Wine Academy, an initiative between the SHTM and Hotel ICON, organises practical workshops for food and wine enthusiasts that take place at the lab.
Samsung Digital Lab for Hospitality Technology
Purposely built for SHTM students and researchers, the Samsung Digital Lab for Hospitality Technology is equipped with 70 notebook computers installed with a range of business applications, data analysis software, specialised hospitality and tourism software, together with wired and wireless connectivity functions to PolyU’s campus network and Internet.
