The audition process

SCAPA is a public school, but to attend, prospective students must go through an audition process. Students from 3rd grade to 7th grade may try out for SCAPA Bluegrass, the elementary/middle school. Students choose one major to audition for, and, depending on the major, go to SCAPA and complete their audition. However, students in grades 8-11 can try out for SCAPA Lafayette.

Auditioning as a 3rd grader for 4th grade:

This is where SCAPA starts. There are two classes of 4th graders, each consisting of 27 students. This means 54 students will be able to attend SCAPA this year. The major sizes are not always equal.

Auditioning as a 4th grader for 5th grade:

Students who audition are placed on a waiting list. For each student in this grade who leaves SCAPA, a student on the waiting list is called in. The 5th grade classes still consist of 54 students, 27 in each class.

Auditioning as a 5th grader for 6th grade:

The class is enlarged by 2, to 56 children (28 in each class). More children may be admitted to SCAPA if someone leaves.

Auditioning as a 6th grader for 7th grade:

Students who audition are placed on a waiting list. For each student in this grade who leaves SCAPA, a student on the waiting list is called in. The 7th grade classes still consist of 56 students, 28 in each class.

Auditioning as a 7th grader for 8th grade:

Students who audition are placed on a waiting list. For each student in this grade who leaves SCAPA, a student on the waiting list is called in. The 8th grade classes still consist of 56 students, 28 in each class.

Students can audition for high school as well, but there is not a specific limit for how many students in each major.

Majors

There are nine majors at SCAPA.

Drama

There are two teachers in this area. Students learn skills such as Improv, Mask Making, Make-up, Scene Writing, Character Work, Play Study, and many others.

Creative Writing

There is one teacher in this area. Students learn how to write in many different genres, and study elements of writing.

Ballet

There is one teacher in this area. Students hone their ballet skills.

Contemporary Dance

There is one teacher in this area. Students hone their modern, jazz, and tap skills.

Piano

There is one teacher in this area. Students practice many different styles, study elements of music, and perform in concerts and events regularly.

Visual Art

There are two teachers in this area. Students create art in almost every way possible, from paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos, and many others.

Voice

There is one teacher in this area. Students sing many different styles, and study elements of music.

Band

There is one teacher and one assistant teacher in this area. Students play many different styles, study elements of music, and perform in concerts regularly.

Orchestra

There is one teacher in this area. Students play many different styles, study elements of music, and perform in concerts and events regularly.

4th and 5th graders have majors together. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have majors together. However, some majors such as Art have separate major classes for 4th, 5th and 6th grades. There are two teachers for the drama, and visual art majors. The students in these majors have each teacher for two 9 weeks, each. In these majors, the classes are usually split 6th and 7th graders, and 8th graders; or 6th graders, and 7th and 8th graders.

In high school, each major is split differently. In Ballet, Creative Writing, Piano, and Contemporary Dance, all four grades are put together. In Drama, the class is split in three, with 1st(Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors) and 2nd(Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors) years together, 3rd years together(Juniors or Seniors), and 4th years(Seniors) together. In Voice, Band, and Orchestra, the students audition for a spot in one of Lafayette's Bands, Orchestras, or Choirs, and have an additional music class which all music majors take together depending on grade. In Visual Art, students are split by grade level.

Minors

Minors are only for middle school students, grades 6th-8th. Minors are 8th period, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Children do not have to audition for their Minor. They list three of the arts (dance, piano, band, voice, etc.) to be their minor. Out of those three they have listed down, the counselor (usually) will sort out who will have which minor. Students are allowed to change their minor at the end of one year, for the next, only if their grades permit. If there is not enough room in the minor they wish, they must stay in their original minor. The minor can be any one of the majors choices (i.e. dance, visual art, piano, creative writing, etc.) as long as the child's Minor category is not the same as the Major category.

SCAPA at Bluegrass

SCAPA only consists of two classes per grade, making ten homerooms total. There are always 276 children total at SCAPA. SCAPA Bluegrass' building consists of two floors.

Elementary school

Elementary School at SCAPA is very normal. 4th grade students have their homeroom teacher for either:

1. Grammar, Reading, Spelling, Writing
2. Math, Social Studies

This depends on which homeroom teacher they have. After majors, 4th grade students go to the other 4th grade teacher for the subjects they haven't had yet, for the rest of the day. They also have science with a separate teacher every day for one class period. For example, if a student had Grammar, Reading, Spelling, and Writing first, they would go to the other 4th grade teacher for Math and Social Studies. After lunch each day, 4th graders have classes called "Specials" which are classes like Physical Education, Health, Music, Art, or Drama.

5th grade is a little different. Students have one teacher for all subjects except science, and "Specials".

Middle school

6th grade at SCAPA is usually a big adjustment for kids, as with any other child entering middle school. In middle school, there are 8 class periods a day, and kids have their majors class every day. There are no differences between 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, other than certain perks for the 8th graders, as they are the "Seniors" of SCAPA Bluegrass. These "perks" include an 8th grade trip, a trip to the Renaissance Fair, and making Gingerbread Houses for charity.

All of the general classes (Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, P.E., Health, etc.) are the same. Math is the only area that has different levels available. In 7th grade, students take a test to determine whether they are put into Pre-Algebra, or Algebra I in 8th grade. The class is usually split unevenly into three classes (one large Algebra I, one small Algebra I, and one small Pre-Algebra). Sometimes, depending on the scores, the entire grade is put into Algebra I.

High school

SCAPA continues on to high school, at Lafayette High School. Students coming from SCAPA Bluegrass do not need to audition and are automatically accepted. Students have a class for their major on both A days and B days (Lafayette uses a block scheduling system). Music students (Band, Orchestra, Piano, Voice) have their specific major class one day, and Music Theory the other. Some majors are held in SCAPA Blugrass (Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Piano, Drama), and students walk over from Lafayette to take this class.

Performances

SCAPA puts on several plays each year, usually including one straight show designed for middle school students, and a musical designed for grades 6-8 with a 4th and 5th grade musical chorus. A majority of the school is usually involved in the musical, which is held at the Lexington Opera House.

SCAPA Lafayette also puts on several shows a year, designed for 9-12 grades, with occasional performances or technical aid from grades 6-8, depending on need/interest. SCAPA Lafayette's shows also include non-SCAPA students who attend Lafayette. The musical is held at the Lexington Opera House, while the straight plays are held in differing locations.

SCAPA also holds "Dance SCAPA", a showcase of all dancers' talents, also performed at the Lexington Opera House. "Dance SCAPA" is held once a year and consists of all Ballet and Contemporary dance majors and minors from grades 4-12.

Currently, SCAPA is attempting to gather funds for its own performance facility, at http://www.scapacenterforthearts.org/.

In addition many of the majors at SCAPA perform informances. In these performances children from a few majors perform a piece, or several pieces for an audience that is usually parents and family.

Each of the music majors have concerts throughout the year.

Art students have their work displayed at several performances throughout the year.

SCAPA Speech Team

The school is well known for its Speech Team, which has won the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) State Tournament in the Junior Division every year since 1997.

The team consists of 6th through 8th graders, with placement in categories by audition.

They are currently celebrating their 19th year in a row of obtaining the State Championship, and preparing for the next state meet.
