Saülo Mercader (born 1944 at San Vicente del Raspeig, Province of Alicante) is a Spanish artist, currently living and working in Greece, Spain and France.

Biography

Saülo Mercader Salo Mercader Pintura y Artistas

He studied the techniques of moulding and casting at the Fallas studio in Alicante. His first exhibitions were held in 1964 in Bilbao. He was awarded the Vocation Fund Prize and received a grant from the French Government. He moved to Paris in 1974, where he learnt weaving from Jagoda Buic. He had an exhibition at the FIAC (Grand palais-Paris) in 1978. He took engraving lessons at W. Hayter's studio at the l'École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris.

In 1981, he was awarded the American Fulbright grant which allowed him to live and work for two years in New York City. He took the Master of Art and Education Degree at the Teachers' College, Columbia University, and attended Professor Maxwell's lithography lessons. Around this time he exhibited large canvasses of American football. In America he met Niki de Saint Phalle, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

He returned to Paris and was awarded a Doctorate from Paris VIII University in 1986.

Mercader's works can be found in numerous private and state or public collections and museums in the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (cabinet des estampes), Paris.

Since 1995 he has produced frescoes in Athens, sculptures in Spain and paintings in France. He lives and works in Greece, Spain and France. In 2007 his sculpture Dona Lluna was unveiled in San Vicente del Raspeig. The composer Manuel Lillo Torregrosa dedicated an Oberture to this sculpture.

He is Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and holds the Vermeil Medal of the Ville de Paris . He is given the honorific title of " Honorific Citizen" by a Committee El Almoçaret from his native city of San Vicente del Raspeig (Spain).
