Background and recording

In November 2015, Manson announced in an interview with KEGL that he, along with Tyler Bates, Twiggy and Gil Sharone, had begun working on the band's tenth studio album. Its title and release date were revealed in July 2016 during an interview with Ryan J. Downey at the APMAs, after Manson had been presented with their Icon Award. However, he also stated in the same interview that Say10 was a "working title", implying that it could be altered before release. The title dates back to Manson's twelfth-grade Christian school yearbook.

As with previous album The Pale Emperor, Manson and Bates worked on Say10 while the latter was composing score material for US television series Salem; the third season of which features Manson as a recurring cast member, portraying a barber surgeon sociopath named Thomas Dinley. The band recorded parts of the album in Louisiana, where Manson was filming scenes for Salem. They had previously recorded their 1996 album Antichrist Superstar in the state. In September, Manson confirmed that they were "putting the finishing touches" on the record.

Composition and style

Manson has said that the album is "not very much in any way like The Pale Emperor. The people who have heard the new songs said it reminded them of their favorite parts of Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals—but with a new, different approach. It's pretty violent in its nature for some reason, and it's not emotional in the same way. It's got a chip on its shoulder." Manson has described it as "by far the most thematic and over-complicated thing that I've done", and has said it contains some of his most politically charged lyrics. He had previously indicated that he would not be voting in the 2016 US presidential election, explaining that: "I don't think, as an artist, I can make as much of a difference voting as I can with the commentaries I make on [Say10]."

Release and promotion

On November 8 – the day of the US presidential election – the band released a teaser clip of a new music video. It features a scene of Manson tearing a page from Revelation 13 out of a Bible, followed by shots of him brandishing a bloodstained knife and standing over a beheaded man dressed to resemble Donald Trump—in a suit and red tie. It was directed by Tyler Shields.

The album was tentatively due for release on Valentine's Day 2017, although this failed to materialize. A month-long period of silence from the band on their social media accounts followed. On March 22, the band's eponymous vocalist posted a video to his Instagram account, featuring the Cross of Lorraine, with the caption: "6:19. The time has come." Numerous publications hypothesized whether 6:19 referred to a June 19 release date, a bible verse, or the lyrics to the Eat Me, Drink Me track "If I Was Your Vampire". British rock magazine NME contacted the band for clarification towards the album's release date, with a spokesman confirming it would see release during the summer.
