Dr. Sarfaraz Jalil Baig is an obesity and Bariatric surgeon in India. He is also a laparoscopic surgeon who handles complex gastrointestinal and obesity cases in Eastern India. He is the founder of Digestive Surgery Clinic - a gastrointestinal surgery and weight loss centre situated in Kolkata. He is also a co-founder of BMI-India - a weight management clinic for health-conscious people.

Being an MS, FRCS and FIAGES, he participates actively in OSSI (Society for Obesity Surgeons in India), IAGES (Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons), IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity) and IASG (Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology). He has conducted a laparoscopic adrenalectomy on a three-month old baby; the first doctor in the world to accomplish this feat.

Career

In early 2000s, Dr Sarfaraz pursued MBBS in the field of Bariatric science. Ever since, he has been practicing GI Cancer Surgery, Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgery at the Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata. Dr. Baig has authored monographs on Liver and Biliary Surgery. He has also delivered lectures on gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopic surgery in various conferences held in India and abroad. Dr Baig's experience in gastroenterology made him eligible for being a Joint Organizing Secretary of SASICON (2006), CBD Workshop (2007), OSSI (2008), Liver Workshop (2008) and Hernia Congress (2010) conferences, all held in Kolkata. His publications include a chapter about surgical nutrition in the ‘Textbook of Surgery’.

Dr Sarfaraz's extensive researches on Gall Bladder Mucosa, Acute Pancreatitis, Bronchobiliary Fistula, Pediatric Colorectal Cancer, Duodenal Adenocarcinoma and Ileosigmoid Knot are published in Tropical Gastroenterology (2005), Tropical Gastroenterology (2006), Journal of Minimal Access Surgery (2009), J Ped Surg of India, India Journal of Surgery (2009) and Indian Journal of Surgery (2012) respectively.

Contributions

First Gastric Bypass Surgery in Odisha

Dr. Baig was an active surgeon in the first gastric bypass surgery held at the Shanti Memorial Hospital in Odisha. During the surgery, he was accompanied by the obesity support group of Shanti Memorial Hospital, including Dr. Sreejoy Patnaik, Dr. Manas Sahoo and Dr. Basanta Pradhan. The surgery was performed successfully on a morbid obese patient, who weighed 110 kg and had Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 at the time of surgery.

Raising Awareness of Bariatric Surgery in Bangladesh

On 12 August 2015, Dr. Baig paid a short visit to Bangladesh to be an active part of an obesity awareness program. He delivered a lecture on Bariatric Surgery and shared his surgical experience with Star Health, a Health-based News Company based out in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He emphasized on childhood obesity and measures to prevent obesity in children.
