History

The name of the place comes from a hermit named Engelmarus, who was born in 1060 in Lüftlhof, Passau. after he was taught by a bishop, he decided to make a colony near the river in Donau. Engelmarus was a popular guy and was thought to be an animal healer. He was killed in the winter of 1100, when some of his "followers" beat him to death, probably because of jealousy. His body was found during Pentecost by a priest named Ruodbertus, who brought his body to the valley, where he was buried. In the year 1131, they built a church over his burial spot. Later the place was colonized and the place was dubbed "Sankt Englmar".
