Etymology

The name is said to be derived when Sankara hid here to protect himself from Bhashmasura who was blessed with boon by Lord Sankara that the head on which he places his palm would be burnt into ashes). Sankara refers to Lord Shiva and guptam is a secret, the place where Lord Shiva hid to protect himself from Bhasmasura.

Religious life

In the Madanagopalaswamy temple, the shrine of Krishna has an axe, instead of the flute that is normally seen.

Muthyalamma and Mahalakshmi Amma are the traditional village goddesses, a temple for them is located in santhapeta near panchayat office. Pydimamba talli temple and Sattema talli temple are located in Rekapallivaripalem. The Subrahmanya Swamy temple on the bank of the Raktatulya attracts devotees every Tuesday. There is a large Smartha Brahmin population, but there is no temple for Shiva in the village.
