Early life
Sanjay, his parents and two siblings moved from Uganda in 1972 as a refugee escaping the dictator Idi Amin and settled in Bolton. He attended university at Manchester Polytechnic studying Computer Science and Physics. It was whilst at university he formed Per-Scent, selling branded perfumes to retailers.
Per-Scent
Per-Scent was formed in 1990 with a £20,000 loan and has supplied retailers such as Asda and Superdrug. Vipul Vadera, Sanjay's brother is Managing Director. As well as distributing fragrances, the company also develops its own products including Fame & Fortune and by Samantha.
The Fragrance Shop
Sanjay purchased The Fragrance Shop in 2006 from Peacocks and embarked upon an expansion plan, taking the retailer from 92 stores to over 170 today. Further expansion is planned with 20 new stores targeted as well as plans to open overseas stores.
In the 12 months to March 31 2015, The Fragrance Shop grew profits by 6.5 per cent to £13.2m, compared to £12.4m last year.
In 2012, Sanjay teamed The Fragrance Shop with children's charity, Rays of Sunshine with the business donating 5p from every transaction to the charity. To date over £450,000 has been raised.
