Sanjay Singh Negi is an Indian surgeon internationally known for his expertise in hepato-biliary pancreatic surgery and liver transplantation. Currently, he is heading the liver transplant programme at BLK Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, India and is Professor of College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur.

Career and achievements

Sanjay Singh Negi was born in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, India. He was a student of Birla Vidya Mandir, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India and got his MBBS degree in 1994 from Goa Medical College, Goa, India, MS (General Surgery) degree in 1997 from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi and MCh (Surgical Gastroenterology) degree in 2000 from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. Subsequently, he joined as Consultant in Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi in 2003. Liver Transplantation programme in India at that time, especially in public sector hospitals, was in its infancy and Negi joined as founder faculty at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi which is first of its kind in the country. Being the founder and lead faculty in HPB Surgery at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi. Currently, he is the Director and Head of Hepato-Biliary Pancreatic (HPB) Surgery and Liver Transplantation at BLK Super Speciality Hospital and is Professor of Surgical Gastroenterology at College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur. Negi has been involved in over 500 liver transplantation procedures.

In view of poor deceased donor organ donation, especially in North India, he has been actively involved in campaigns for sensitizing the doctors and public about organ donation and have been framing guidelines for National Organ Transplantation Programme. Negi is also a skilled hepato-biliary pancreatic, gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgeon performing complex surgery for liver cancer, biliary cancer, gallbladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, gastrointestinal cancers and re-operative abdominal surgery.

Negi has not only treated patients from all over the country, but also from South Asia, the Middle East, CIS, Africa, Pakistan, Iraq, Myanmar, Mongolia, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Besides, he has also helped the doctors and hospitals of these nations in establishing liver services through training, conducting out-patient services and teleconferencing.

His research interest is in the field of clinical liver transplantation, liver regeneration, gallbladder cancer, bile duct cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis. He is on editorial team of Webmed Central
