Sandringham College (established 1988) is a two-campus secondary college located in the south-eastern suburb of Sandringham in Melbourne, Victoria.

Contents

In 1987 the State Government of Victoria decided to merge four schools – Beaumaris High, Hampton High, Highett High and Sandringham Technical Schools. It was at a time when the VCE was first introduced as the main certificate for the Later Years of schooling. The Sandringham Technical School site became the Senior Campus, Hampton High, Beaumaris High and Highett High became Years 7-10 Junior Campuses – Sandringham College was formed.

Campuses

Sandringham College is made up of the following two campuses:

  • Sandringham 7-10 Campus (formerly Highett Campus and Highett High School), on Bluff Rd, Sandringham. Population of approximately 435.
  • Senior Campus (formerly Sandringham Campus and Sandringham Technical School), located on Holloway Rd, Sandringham. Student population of approximately 760.
  • Hampton Campus - Closed December 1988
  • Beaumaris Campus - Closed December 2015
  • Beaumaris Secondary College - will be built as a standalone school begins operation in 2018
  • The Sandringham Junior campus caters for students in years 7-10 whilst the Senior campus is designed for the education of students studying for their VCE VCAL and Vocational Education and Training(VET) studies. The Senior campus is known for its 'young adult environment' which encourages creativity, self-discipline and an 'adult' relationship between students and their teachers. In addition, it has a great international program, with sister schools in Britain and Asia.

The school is known for its outstanding music and arts programs along with one of the largest range of subjects in the state, attracting many students from a wide area of South East Melbourne.

    Architecture and History

Both campuses of Sandringham College were designed by the Public Works Department of Victoria and built in the Light Timber Construction style.

  • Highett High School was constructed in 1955 with Stage 2 extensions made in 1957 and 1960.
  • Sandringham Technical School had two LTC wings constructed in 1955.
  • Both campuses are clad in grey cement tiles and with minor alterations, all buildings remain intact.
