History
As a keen amateur genealogist, S&N co-founder Nigel Bayley had compiled his family history on a BBC Computer and wanted to transfer it onto a PC with Windows software. As he couldn't find a UK supplier of Windows packages for family historians, he decided to offer a UK service offering genealogy software for windows and S&N Genealogy Supplies was born in 1992. S&N represents the initials of the Directors, Sue and Nigel Bayley.
Family History Data on CD
In 1992, CD was the latest technology at the time. Family historians took advantage of this to access data from a wide range of areas including parish records, local directories including Kelly's Directories and atlases and maps. S&N Genealogy published this material in their British Data Archive section.
The English and Wales Census on CD
Family historians prior to 2001 needed a fiche and film viewer to be able to view the census records from England and Wales. It was believed to be impossible to publish this sort of information on CD-ROM due to the sheer size, but S&N tested various scanners and compression methods and eventually developed a system to publish the census on CD.
S&N British Data Archive Ltd was founded in 1999 to work with CD pressing plants and the Public Records Office (PRO) now known as The National Archives to make the project a reality. The project caught the attention of the media at the time and many family historians were excited about the development of putting Census records on CD.
S&N developed a reputation amongst family historians as the largest producer of Census CDs in the UK
