Career
Arni started writing her first book as a child. It was The Mahabharata: A Child's View which was published by 1996 by Tara Books. As an adult she switched her myths and has written two books based on the Ramayana. Sita's Ramayana, is a graphic novel developed in collaboration with Patua artist Moyna Chitrakar and published in 2011, was on the New York Times Bestseller list for graphic novels for two weeks in 2011. The third book is The Missing Queen a "speculative-fiction mythological thriller". It has been published by Penguin/Zubaan n 2014.

In 2003 the German translation of The Mahabharata: A Child's View was presented at the International Children´s and Young Adult Literature is a program of the Berlin International Literature Festival.
In an interview Arni mentions that her "... perspective has always been female, but in the future I’d like to explore what happens to men in war".
Education
Arni is an alumnus of the United World College in Italy and has a double-major in Religion and Film Studies from Mount Holyoke College (USA). She has lived in Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Italy and the USA.
