In 2014, she was appointed as director of the Precourt Institute for Energy, the university's hub of energy research and education. Benson will continue on as director of Stanford’s Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP), a position she has had since 2007.

Benson has won various awards, including the 2012 Greenman Award, Michel T. Halbouty Distinguished Lecture Award from the Geological Society, and the ARCS American Pacesetter Award. Benson received a B.S. in geology from Barnard College, Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in materials and mineral engineering from the University of California-Berkeley.
