History

Prior to the development of the Edwardsville campus. the school was established as one of six "Divisions of Academic Programs" for the Residential Centers in Alton and East St. Louis.

When the move was made to the new campus in 1965, these "Divisions" became the Schools of Business, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences.

The name of the school was changed to the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior on July 1, 2014 to reflect its wider range of academics and research.

Overview

The SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior consists of the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Kinesiology and Health Education, Psychology, and Special Education and Communication Disorders.

The school supports a number of community outreach activities, including the Attention and Behavior Clinic, the Cougar Literacy Clinic, the SIUE Charter High School at the SIUE East St. Louis Center, the Southern Illinois Professional Development Center, the Speech-Language-Hearing Center, and the Weight Management Clinic.

The school is also involved in a variety of other projects, often jointly with other institutions.

Academics

The School of Education offers 8 baccalaureate degrees, 3 teaching certificate programs to accompany a baccalaureate degree in a field other than education, 15 masters degrees, 2 post-masters certificates, 2 post-masters specialist degrees, and an Education Doctorate in educational administration. There is also a Ph.D. in Education offered in cooperation with SIU Carbondale.

Faculty

In the Fall of 2010, the SIUE School of Education had 91 full-time faculty members, nearly 80% of whom held professorial ranks.

Facilities

The offices of the school and its departments are in Alumni Hall, Founders Hall, and the Vadalabene Center. Classes related to a specific academic major may also be held in other campus buildings.

The SIUE School of Education works in cooperation with school districts throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area and Southern Illinois to provide its students with observational and teaching opportunities.

Accreditation

All of the SIUE School of Education programs are fully accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education as well as by the Illinois State Board of Education.
