History

The founders of SITIA were inspired by the work of Norman Borlaug and sought to use science and technology to address two international development goals: increasing food supplies and reducing population growth.

SITIA partnered with IFAD to create a regional information and communications network in West and Central Africa named FIDAFRIQUE.

SITIA partnered with the CGIAR to create AGRIVISTA database of agricultural data support the United Nations "Green Revolution."

Current projects

SITIA is in its third year supporting collaborative curriculum development for secondary school students on global climate change. The "Behavior Change or Climate Change" curriculum includes student-led classroom units on Global Climate Change Science, Energy, Food, Transportation. Each unit includes discussions of behavior changes which are within the personal control of secondary school students and which can make a positive impact on reducing climate change. The students of Menlo-Atherton High School won first prize from the California State Air Resources Board in "2011 Climate Generation" competition.

SITIA provides information and communications technology support for international public health work in Ethiopia, India, and Pakistan through a grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
