Sunil was born on 6 May 1989 to Vittalacharya and Shanta in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. At the age of four, he lost his mother. His father worked as a carpenter and his brother, a goldsmith. Born to a poor family, he used bamboo for hockey stick during his younger days.

Sunil made his senior international debut in the 2007 Asia Cup in Chennai, the tournament that India won. He was also a part of the team that won the silver at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in 2008. The 2011 Champion's Challenge was an early high point in his career in which he scored four goals, the most by an Indian forward. SV Sunil is regarded as one of the fastest player in the game as he is one of the most fittest custodian of the Indian national hockey team mostly making his runs from right and left and plays more as a winger.he has had the form of his career in champions trophy 2016 where the Indian team managed to win silver medal for the first time as they went down to Australia 3-1 in penalties after a 0-0 draw in regulation time.He scored some vital goals and made others for his strikers.he is more of a gareth bale of football with some serious pace as he dribbles past defenders but of course with a stick in his hand.
