São Filipe Airport (Portuguese Aeródromo de São Filipe) (IATA: SFL, ICAO: GVSF) is Cape Verde's fifth most-used airport, located in the island of Fogo. It is located southeast of the town of São Filipe, near the Atlantic Ocean.

History

The airfield was opened in the late 20th century. It was the only airport in the southwest of the nation until an airfield in Mosteiros opened. From 1992, it also served passengers from and to Brava and after the closure of that airport and later in Mosteiros, once again, it is the only aerodrome serving the southwest of the nation.

During the 1995 eruption, the aerodrome was closed.

In May 2011, its runway was extended to 1,500 meters by 30 meters wide from the previous length of 1,197 meters by 20 meters wide, in order to accommodate bigger planes such as "ATR 42" and "ATR 72", upon landing and taking off or taxiing. The totality of the airport's terminal went through complete remodeling, followed by the extension of its runway.

Once the fourth most used, it carried 74,408 passengers in 2012 which made it the fifth most used, in 2013, it dropped to 62,088. In 2013, the annual air operations were 1,756 and transported 54 tonnes of cargo.

From November 23 to late December, the aerodrome was closed due to the eruption of Pico do Fogo, the aerodrome was closed and its flights were cancelled. Also that time, the number of passengers and flights at the airport dropped. It also affected a part of the island's tourism.

In 2016, the airport had 55,168 passengers, lower than in 2012. Also in 2016, there were 1,052 air operations and 26 tons of cargo shipped, 40% less in three years.
