Everton

Watson was in the academy at Everton. He was released in September 2010.
Wigan Athletic

Watson then joined Wigan Athletic. He turned professional in 2011, and played for the Wigan Athletic Development Squad in the 2011–12 season.

On 10 August 2012 Watson joined Football League Two side Accrington Stanley F.C. on loan until January 2013. Watson made his professional debut for Accrington Stanley against Morecambe on 4 September 2012 in the Football League Trophy. He returned early from his loan spell on 13 September 2012.

In the summer of 2013, Watson was among ten players to be released by the club.
Leicester City

Having featured in all four of Leicester's Barclays Under-21 Premier League matches on trial and impressing both in central midfield and at right-back, Ryan signed for the remainder of the 2013-14 season as part of Leicester City's Development Squad. The next year, Watson signed a contract extension with the club, keeping him until 2016.
Watson made his Leicester City debut, making his first start in the 0-1 defeat to Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup 2nd round on 26 August 2014. On 1 September 2014, Watson joined League Two side Northampton Town on loan until the start of January. Watson made his debut in the 2-0 victory against Dagenham & Redbridge on 6 September 2014. Having made 5 appearances for Northampton, Watson returned to Leicester City on 2 October 2014 after picking up a cruciate ligament injury, ruling him out beyond the end of his loan period.
On 20 August 2015, after recovering from his cruciate ligament injury, Watson re-joined League Two side Northampton Town on loan until 3 January. Watson re-debut his Northampton Town for the second time two days later, playing 90 minutes in a 2-0 loss against Plymouth Argyle. Nine days later, on 1 September 2015, Watson scored his first professional goal in the first round of Football League Trophy, in a 3-2 win over Colchester United. After making fifteen appearance for the club, Watson's loan spell at Northampton Town came to an end and returned to his parent club.
After returning to his parent club, Watson made his return in the club's reserve, where he captained the side, in a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough U21. After appearing in number of games for the club's reserve for the reminder of the season, it was announced that Watson was among seven players listed to be released by the club.
Barnet
On 1 July 2016, following his release from Leicester, Watson joined Barnet.
