The rusty whistler (Pachycephala hyperythra) is a species of bird in the family Pachycephalidae endemic to New Guinea. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Taxonomy and systematics

Alternate names for the rusty whistler include the Bornean mountain whistler, brownish whistler, rufous-breasted whistler and rusty-breasted whistler. The latter name should not be confused with the species of the same name, Pachycephala fulvotincta.

Subspecies

Four subspecies are recognized:

  • P. h. hyperythraSalvadori, 1876: Found in New Guinea
  • P. h. sepikianaStresemann, 1921: Found in northern New Guinea
  • P. h. reichenowiRothschild & Hartert, 1911: Found in northeastern New Guinea
  • P. h. salvadoriiRothschild, 1897: Originally described as a separate species. Found in southeastern New Guinea
