Background

Rukhshana (birth name Hamida, Persian: ‎‎ حمیده) was born in Waziristan, Afghanistan, the daughter of Aseel Khan Waziri, a four star General in the Afghan Army. Their family were originally from the southern parts of Afghanistan who later migrated to Kabul. She is credited to be first Afghan woman to remove the chador to pursue her career. She had performed for royalty, celebrities, and films (e.g. Shah of Iran, Czech Republic, Lance Armstrong).

At the height of her popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, Rukhshana's posters were widely distributed in Kabul, and her photos also graced covers of calendars and magazines. She had a wider fan base over other singers as she was bilingual and could reach a larger segment of Afghan society. Her music includes songs both in Pashto, her native tongue, and Dari language. Since her emigration from Afghanistan nearly four decades ago, Rukhshana has vowed to not sing till there is peace in her country. On many occasions her original lyrics and songs have been stolen and performed by the likes of other Persian, Afghan and Tajik singers, without true and valid credit. She gave an interview with BBC London and allowed for her photographs to appear in a newspaper. Still graceful, beautiful and talented. She enjoys time with her family and friends.
