The species can grow to 9 cm (3.5 in). It is olive-colored to bluish with an orange lateral stripe, and breeding males are reddish. Its maximum reported age is 3 years. It has one dorsal fin, one anal fin, and two ventral fins.

It can be found throughout the central and eastern United States and southern Canada in clear pools and riffles in large creeks and small rivers.
