Ronny Xin Yi Chieng (Chinese: 錢信伊; pinyin: Qián Xìnyī) is a Malaysian comedian and actor. Chieng is currently a senior correspondent on The Daily Show on Comedy Central and creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng: International Student which premiered on the ABC (Australia) and Comedy Central in 2017.

Early life and education

Chieng is of Chinese descent. He was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and was raised in Singapore and in New Hampshire in the United States. Chieng was educated at Yuhua Primary School, Pioneer Secondary School and Pioneer Junior College in Singapore, and the University of Melbourne in Australia, where he resided at Trinity College and graduated in 2009 with Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) and Bachelor of Laws degrees. He also obtained a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University in 2012.
Career

In July 2016, he was named one of 10 Comics to Watch by Variety.
Viral response to Fox News segment

In October 2016, Chieng appeared on The Daily Show to give his response to a Jesse Watters Fox News segment deemed by many as racist. Chieng aired an expletive-laden criticism of the conservative network's segment. He also revisited New York City's Chinatown, where Watters had mocked residents, and conducted more respectful interviews in Mandarin Chinese. The video went viral and received coverage in the Washington Post, Slate, and other major media.
Upcoming projects
In 2016, Chieng co-wrote and starred in the pilot of a sitcom called Ronny Chieng: International Student, based on his own experience as a Malaysian student in Australia. It is being developed into a series for Comedy Central in America and ABC TV in Australia and will screen in June 2017.
In April 2017, he joined the cast of the Warner Bros. film Crazy Rich Asians directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Constance Wu. The film marks his American feature debut.
