Roger E. Kanet is an American professor, author and researcher. Before 1994, his work focused mainly on the Cold War, but now he looks at issues of nationalism and Russian foreign policy. He has been the Associate Vice Chancellor and Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Dean of the School of International Studies at the University of Miami.

Educational career

Kanet is a 1954 graduate of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati. He received a bachelor of philosophy (Ph.B.) from Berchmanskolleg, Pullach-bei-München, Germany in 1960 with a focus on philosophy, a bachelor of arts (A.B.) from Xavier University in 1961, master's (MA) from Lehigh University in 1963 with a focus on international relations, a second master's (A.M.) from Princeton University in 1965, followed by a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton in 1966.

Kanet was an Assistant and Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Kansas; an instructor at the U.S. Army Command and Staff College; Associate Professor and Professor of Political Science at the University of Illinois, and a Professor at the University of Miami.

Professor Kanet’s major teaching and research interests focus on postcommunist Europe, on questions of European and global security, democratization and nationalism, both in a comparative perspective, and on aspects of U.S. foreign and security policy. He also teaches a course entitled the World before European Domination. Prior to coming to Miami in 1997, he taught at the University of Kansas and later at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he served as Head of the Political Science Department, as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and as Director of International Programs and Studies.[1]

Works

Kanet is an extremely productive researcher. He has been the primary editor for over 30 edited books and 5 special issues of journals. He has contributed over 125 chapters to edited volumes. He has been the general editor for 34 book series in political science. Recent solo authored works include Russian Foreign Policy in the 21st Century, The New Security Environment: The Impact On Russia, Central And Eastern Europe, and A Resurgent Russia and the West: The European Union, NATO and Beyond.

Teaching interests

Kanet’s major teaching and research interests focus on post-communist Europe, on questions of European and global security, democratization and nationalism, both in a comparative perspective, and on aspects of U.S. foreign and security policy. He also teaches a course entitled the World before European Domination.

Kanet has supervised many PhD candidates and views his accomplishments as a mentor as highly important. He has overseen 45 successful dissertations as of 2012.
