Life
He taught at Beloit College, the University of Iowa, Northwestern University, Pitzer College, and the University of Central Florida, and the University of Northern Iowa from 1963 to 1996.
He was editor of The North American Review from 1969 to 2000; his work appeared in Ploughshares.
He married fiction writer Susan Hubbard in 1995; they live in Orlando, and Cape Canaveral, Florida.
