Roberta Feldman has a doctorate in psychology, is an architect, an educator, and Professor Emerita, School of Architecture, University of Illinois Chicago. She is based in Chicago. She has served on numerous boards including the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Environmental Design Research Association, National Public Housing Museum and co-author of The Dignity of Resistance: Women Residents’ Activism in Public Housing with Susan Stall.

Biography

Feldman attended Smith College and Columbia University for her undergraduate education. She received a Master and Doctorate in Psychology in the Environmental Psychology Program from the City University of New York. She has spent her academic career at the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her work is invested in design as a right for a just and sustainable world. She was co-founder of the City Design Center at UIC in 1994. The interdisciplinary center encompassed research, design and community engagement. Working with nonprofit agencies and community partners, the Community Design Center was a publicly engaged design center. Her work with communities is based on a methodological approach of participatory design and action research. She has served in various administrative capacities across the university including Director of Architecture Graduate Studies and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She has been the recipient of the Latrobe Prize with Sergio Palleroni, David Perkes, and Bryan Bell and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Collaborative Practice Award with Charles Leek.
