Haywood made a single first-class appearance for Kent against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's in 1878. In the Marylebone Cricket Club's first-innings of 199, Haywood bowled 5 wicketless overs. In Kent's first-innings response, Haywood ended their lowly innings of 39 unbeaten on 0, with Kent being made to follow-on in their second-innings. They fared little better in that innings, making 56, with Haywood being dismissed for a duck by Robert Clayton. The Marylebone Cricket Club's margin of victory was by an innings and 104 runs. This was his only major appearance for Kent.

He died at town of his birth on 9 May 1922. His nephew John Ireland also played first-class cricket. His son, Robert, and grandson, also called Robert, both played first-class cricket.
