At Riverbend, we offer the full complement of cores approved and required by Alberta Education. Students take English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, a Second Language (French or Spanish), Physical Education, and Health.
All students are given an opportunity in the spring to select complementary courses for the following school year. We work hard to accommodate as many course selections as possible.
Options
Grade Seven
All grade seven students may select one option between Art, Drama, and Instrumental Music that run full year. They also have a mandatory trimester option that includes: Food Studies, Construction, and Outdoor Education.
Grade Eight
All grade eight students may select two options that will run full year. Option choices at grade eight currently include:
Art, Drama, Food Studies, Construction, Outdoor Education, Instrumental Music, Beginner Guitar, Leadership, Business Ventures (running the school store), Drama, Sports Performance, and Discovery (which includes a trip to Costa Rica in May).
Grade Nine
All grade nine students may select two options that will run full year. Option choices currently include:
Art, Drama, Food Studies, Construction, Outdoor Education, Leadership, Instrumental Music, Advanced Beginner Guitar, Visual Communications, Sports Performance, and Economics of a Foreign Nation (which includes a trip to the European nation being studied during Spring Break)
Timetables
There are 6 periods in a school day at Riverbend, plus a 40 minute lunch break and a 20 minute reading period. Each student takes all 4 of their core classes every day. School starts at 8:20am and ends at 2:44pm every day.
